COMPLETE GUIDE TO DIGITAL CAMERAS

CHAPTER 2: HOW TO BUY

MEMORY

Toshiba America announced in August 1999 a 64 megabyte (MB) SmartMedia card.

COMPACTFLASH TYPE II (CF/2)

The CompactFlash type II (CF/2) was adopted by the CompactFlash Association in March 1998, and is actually thicker, at 5mm , than standard CompactFlash cards, which are 3.3mm thick. The CF/2 standard allows other technologies to do adapted to CompactFlash, including disk drives like the IBM Microdrive. The CF/2 slots will support the older CompactFlash cards, but the new cards will not fit in a regular CompactFlash slot. Manufacturers are also making CF/2 adapters that will allow them to be plugged into a PC Card slot.

Cameras that support CF/2 are: Canon Pro 70, Panasonic's PV-2590 and PV-2090, and the upcoming Casio QV-2000UX.

MAGNETO-OPTICAL MEDIA

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd , Olympus Optical Co Ltd , and Hitachi Maxell Ltd announced in August 1999 that they have jointly developed a new high-capacity memory disc for use in next-generation digital cameras.

The new rewritable magneto-optical disc has a memory capacity of 730 megabytes, but the price and sales information are not yet available. Sanyo says it expects to start selling cameras that use the technology in the summer 2000.
