MacWEEK reports that Avid is buying Softimage from Microsoft. Softimage is known for their high end 3D products, while Avid is known for digital video editing.
As part of the acquisition, Microsoft will own about 9 percent of the company. Intel also owns part of Avid.

[Has anyone else noticed that almost everytime Microsoft buys or sells something to another company they also end up with part of the company? Just take a look at a few transactions over the years; they even ended up with part of Wang when settling a court case that Wang had brought against them. -Ed]

MacWEEK Monday carried an article about PuppetTime, a proposed addition to QuickTime that adds an architecture for creating and animating "digital puppets."

The architecture has been developed by an engineer on the QuickTime project, and is detailed at the PuppetTime website <www.puppettime.com> Curiously Apple supposedly issued a TechNote about PuppetTime (#1130) but we have been unable to find it on Apple's developer website.

Frankly, we checked out PuppetTime a short while ago and couldn't figure it out, but if Apple is planning on supporting it, maybe we should take another look...

Standing ankle deep in the flood waters of the Northeast, it's been kind of hard to get together the news items.
